In the summer of 2024, Girls to Women teamed up with the Meta Community Hub in Menlo Park to host a unique program focused on educating girls at the intersection of technology and art.
Through hands-on experiences with technology and computer software, the girls created storytelling art using a variety of methods. They explored topics such as animation, engineering, graphic design, photography, typography, solar power and sustainability.
Participants had the opportunity to work with different types of technology, including Apple computers, iPads, D/C motors, solar panels, and sewing machines. They also honed their hand skills through activities like paper weaving, collaging, vision boarding, and zine making. The program encourages critical thinking, imagination, creativity, and innovation, allowing the girls to engage in the brainstorming design process and understand the scientific research process. As we continue to move further into the digital era, it's crucial for women, especially women of color, to be well-versed in technology and digital platforms. To address the barriers that often prevent women of color from entering the tech industry in Silicon Valley, Girls to Women created a program specifically designed to educate young women on the intersections between technology and art, using a STEAM-centered curriculum. |
The program emphasized the importance of STEAM education, blending STEM curriculum with art to showcase how the two can work together.
