The Margaret Geis Wright Wellness 5k Run/Walk is a community building event that helps support Girls to Women, an innovative, grassroots, nonprofit, girl centered youth development program. This event is in honor of Margaret Geis Wright.
Who Was Margaret Geis Wright? Margaret Geis Wright, a native of Kansas, was a storyteller, theater patron, mother, grandmother, and benefactor of East Palo Alto's youth. She supported wellness programs for our community's girls, and was a friend to those working with local young people. Margaret, or 'Sam' as she was known to those close to her, was nonjudgmental; saw good in everyone; loved children in particular; and had the gift of inspiring the best in the many whom she touched with her kindness. Ms. Wright's compassionate wisdom is distilled in this saying of hers: "Be an avid knowledge seeker . . . know yourself and be yourself . . . and nothing can stop you from being whatever you want to be."
Girls to Women partners with Mid-Peninsula families, other local youth development agencies, and local schools to provide year-round programming for local girls, supporting healthy development. At the core of our youth development approach is respect for the abilities, knowledge and potential of each girl we serve.
Our girls thrive among the positive, culturally-reflective female role models whom they meet through Girls to Women – that, and an approach which sees girls’ unique attributes and ‘herstories’ as cues to help us best serve them and their families.
Leveraging our community’s array of existing resources, we work collaboratively to bring together the facilities, personnel, and infrastructure to provide excellent programming within reach of under-served girls in East Palo Alto and Menlo Park.
We're the only girl-centered youth development organization in the community.
